Soft Fabric & Full Featured

Unlike GoreTex shells, this fabric is soft and quiet (and breathes). Love the long pit zips and tons of pockets both inside and out--and one on the sleeve. I also like the toothed front zipper (the one used the most) vs. the more difficult to operate zip-lock like sliders (which are used on the pockets). The cuff seals are easily adjustable though I'd like a little elastic also for removing the jacket without re-adjusting tightened cuffs. The fit easily accommodates layers underneath, probably even a down layer, but it feels a little like wearing a box--a mid-coat adjustment bungee would help when wearing unlayered. The hood lacks a rear height adjustment but is adequately adjustable without a helmet (haven't tried a helmet yet). Definitely a premium jacket though, and at the sales price, this thing is a steal!

More applicable than most Gore-Tex jackets

Bought this jacket because on paper it looked capable of holding its own for downpours, and it was too good of a deal to pass up on. After noticing how many pockets it had I decided to use it for a search and rescue mission in which we were in the field for 3 days straight during a nonstop PNW winter rainstorm. Not only did this jacket keep me completely dry, but the venting is ridiculously effective for dumping heat while still offering protection from the elements. I've used this jacket for almost 3 years now and it has never once let me down when I needed it. My favorite application for it now is skiing but I've used it in everything from mountaineering, to climbing, to SAR, to ski touring, all the way to just walking my dog in a downpour. With smart layering this jacket has kept me comfortable in below zero temps with driving snow and wind. Only thing I wish was that more colors were available.

Neoshell fabric rocks

The Polartec Neoshell fabric breathes so much better than any Gore-Tex jacket I have ever used. I didn't want to write a review on this until I have had it out in varied conditions several times. The only thing holding it back from getting 5 stars is the front zipper. It needs a double slider, waterproof zipper. I have had a straight vertical line of leakage down my shirt on the inside right where the zipper is when out in the rain (not unusual when using in the PNW, in the Rockies/Tetons not as much of a problem) There is not an external storm flap over the zipper. The jacket falls to mid-thigh so a double slide on the zipper would come in handy for times when your stretching and get some resistance due to the cut (I'm using this for snowshoeing and back-country skiing/touring). Would also help when your wearing a pack with a waist-belt and nature calls. Bought when on sale. Value rating is based on sale price. I am 5'9" about 195lbs. I normally wear Eddie Bauer products in Tall Large or an XL. I first tried those sizes and they were circus tent sized on me. This fits great at a size Large and I still have room to stretch my arms and fit a reasonable insulation layer under it if needed (Ignitelite Flux.) I liked it so much I bought one for my son when they went on season end clearance prices plus additional 40% off sale.

Perfect fit!

Great fit and finish. Endless features and multi-use pockets. Just wished the hood was removable as I don't always need it, but I knew that before I bought it.
