Good weight / tough / could use a central compression strap

Comments about Expedition Drop Bottom Rolling Duffel - Extra Large:

I have only one complaint so far with this bag: because so much can fit in the XL size, I think the two compression straps are not enough. A central strap would help keep contents from bulging out in the mid-section.

Light bag, durable materials, doesn't hold its shape well

Comments about Expedition Drop Bottom Rolling Duffel - Extra Large:

I have had this bag for over two years and have used it in a variety of circumstances: moving, taking laundry to the laundromat, short domestic trips, car camping, and long international trips. I bought this bag because I have had the carry-on-sized version of this bag for over five years and love it.

Pros:

- As several other commentators have noted, this bag can hold a whole lot of stuff. While that obviously may tempt the user to overpack, that's really more on the consumer than EB. Buyer be warned.
- The two separate main compartments are a very nice feature. Especially on a longer trip, it's great to have an easy way to keep dirty and clean clothes separate.
- Quality zippers, good water resistance
- Wheels have been very durable thus far
- Very lightweight

Con:

The bag's main drawback derives from one of its strengths, namely, its light weight. Perhaps because the material that the shell is made from isn't as firm as a heavier material would have been, the stuff packed in the bag tends to slide to the bottom when the bag is set upright; this gives the bag an extreme pear shape when it's in this position. I've noticed that this is becoming more pronounced as I continue to use the bag over the years, which makes me wonder about the long-term functionality of the bag. Aside from messing up the internal organization of my packing, this also makes it a bit more difficult to steer the bag through crowds at airports, and to lift it in and out of the car, onto the check-in scale, etc.

I have not noticed this problem in the carry-on bag in this same line, so I think this is a problem that results from EB trying to scale up the size of their bag. I wonder if this problem could be addressed if EB added more options for internal organization.

Ultimately, I would highly recommend this bag in its medium-sized version. (I actually liked that version so much that I bought it as a gift for someone else.) I would advise that people look elsewhere for a larger duffel.

My husband wanted this bag when he saw it in the Eddie Bauer store in Amarillo. I bought it for Christmas as one of his presents. He loves it!
