Comments about Men's Rainier Storm Shell Pants:

I bought these primarily for skiing, hiking, and backpacking because I wanted to something lighter and more breathable than regular shell pants. Weight, waterproofness, and breathability were my three primary concerns. These pants exceeded my expectations in all of these areas.

EB's Weatheredge Pro fabric is most similar to eVent fabrics in other jackets I've owned. It's not as light as Gore's Active Shell, but I think it performs much better because it has 3 layers. The outer shell layer is super durable yet soft (almost like a soft shell) which makes is quiet when you move around. It also doesn't look a like a shiny rain jacket, which is nice. The knees are articulated but not reinforced, but the fabric seems durable enough that they don't need to be reinforced. There is also about a 1-2 inch burly cordura layer all the way around the bottom cuffs so they won't wear off on your boots or the ground, and the inside portions of the legs of the pants have a large cordura patch so you won't wear holes when they rub together.

In terms of weight, I called Eddie Bauer and they actually don't know what these weigh. Not having weight them, I would estimate them at under a pound. They feel light but not flimsy. Perfect weight for rolling up and carrying in your pack all the time -- you won't notice them.

The fabric breathes like you won't believe -- I've worn them in 70+ degree hikes and I don't wet out. They are also fairly windproof, but not as much as a wind blocker fabric. That said, if you have your layers dialed in for skiing, they will keep you warm and dry.

The leg zips are also awesome. Each side has 3 separate zipper heads -- one that goes all the way from the bottom to the top, one that goes from the top to the bottom, and one in the middle of those two. Why you ask? Because this way you can zip them all the way up or down from either direction, or you can use the middle one to create a vent hole of any size at any location on your leg. Great idea.

They fit over ski boots just fine without being baggy.

Lastly, the fit is not very "active" in my opinion. They are just a tad baggy, but I see why -- that gives you the ability to move around without restriction.

All in all, the best rain pant for hiking and backpacking I've owned. Also works perfectly for skiing / ski mountaineering because they layer exceptionally and breath better than any other pant in this price range.
