World's Best Down®

Our First Ascent guide team built this ultralight jacket for alpine climbing in cool to cold weather. Windproof ripstop polyester shell. Each cluster of the super high-loft 800 fill StormDown insulation is also treated with a DWR finish so the down retains its loft and superior insulating properties even in wet conditions.

"It's made specifically to be a very lightweight layer with down, which makes it lighter than any kind of other insulation and very compact and packable. When you wear it, you hardly know you have it on."
Ed Viesturs, Eddie Bauer Alpine Guide

This has become my general purpose coat whenever I go outside. It's actually light enough to wear inside on cool nights.

Comfortable light jacket but lacks durability

Comments about Men's MicroTherm StormDown Jacket:

For a jacket advertised for alpine climbing, the outer lining is rips too easily for this jacket to have good value. I am outdoors scrambling and hiking in this jacket and the sleeve area wears down and rips quite easily. I have stitched it back so the down doesn't escape but that takes away from the aesthetics. I came on the site looking for a possible replacement but couldn't justify buying another one for $100+ which will likely get beat up in a few trips outdoors.

Apart from that, this is a solid jacket in terms of warmth for weight, fit and looks. I've read some comments about the lack of warmth but it's consistently my top choice for a jacket to bring when weight and space is limited for single day alpine climbs. You can't treat it as a full-on winter jacket but it does the job in most climates and takes very little space in the pack.

          Needs More Down

Comments about Men's MicroTherm StormDown Jacket:

It is a handsome jacket, but far less warm than expected. Many of the baffles seem very thin on down. It is ok as a spring jacket or layer on not too cold days on the slopes, but hardly for true New England winter conditions. EB needs to beef it up for next year. The other problem with the jacket is the lack of a draw string on the bottom. Again, add one to the next version. In all, it is not of the quality of the many previous Bauer Outerwear pieces I own.

Comments about Men's MicroTherm StormDown Jacket:

I bought this jacket because of the Storm Down feature. Admittedly I have not tested the water repellent aspect yet, I have had the opportunity to test it in the cold while downhill skiing in Maine. I wore it as a third layer under my outer waterproof/breathable shell. Underneath I had a base layer and sweater. Temperatures were in the teens and single digits. The jacket performed beautifully. I decided to ditch my fleece insulation for the down. Glad I did. It breathes well and fits well underneath the shell.
