World's Best Down®

Our First Ascent guide team built this ultralight jacket for alpine climbing in cool to cold weather. Windproof ripstop polyester shell. Each cluster of the super high-loft 800 fill StormDown insulation is also treated with a DWR finish so the down retains its loft and superior insulating properties even in wet conditions.

"It's made specifically to be a very lightweight layer with down, which makes it lighter than any kind of other insulation and very compact and packable. When you wear it, you hardly know you have it on."
Ed Viesturs, Eddie Bauer Alpine Guide

not as warm as claimed

Comments about First Ascent|Men|Jackets & Vests Men's MicroTherm StormDown Jacket:

This is a good jacket for looking like you backpack when hanging around town. It is attractive and not too expensive if you get it on sale. It works nicely as a medium layer under another jacket or shell. I bought it to use when actually backpacking, and it isn't up to the task, although it indeed light. Who invents these temperature rating? Clearly it is the people in marketing, b/c -5 degrees is absolutely absurd. Relaxing at 40 degrees with a shell over this jacket in camp and I feltl chilled. I'll need to buy another down jacket if I really want to be warm sub 40.

Losing All Of The Down

By Ben

Comments about First Ascent|Men|Jackets & Vests Men's MicroTherm StormDown Jacket:

I bought this jacket last winter at an Eddie Bauer store and ever since I bought it it's had constant feather coming out of it. They get on everything, and while the jacket would otherwise look good, it always looks dirty and covered in white pieces of feather instead of just being black. If I wear black under it I have feathers all over me afterwords. Needs to be made better.

Comments about First Ascent|Men|Jackets & Vests Men's MicroTherm StormDown Jacket:

I've been buying Eddie Bauer jackets for the last 27 years. In fact, I consider myself a loyal and proud customer of Eddie Bauer Company. However, changes made to this jacket have not done anything to improve the quality. This jacket is cheap in terms of material, quality and workmanship. What a disappointment!
Changes are simply done to make it 'cheaper to produce for higher profit'. This is NOT the traditional Eddie Bauer's philosophy with Ethic & Quality!!
This is not even a moderate 'ultra light' down jacket that could be used in relatively cold mountaineering environment, despite what the description reads.
Unfortunately, The sleeve cuff material is of cheap quality. THERE IS HARDY ANY AMOUNT OF DOWN IN THE SLEEVES AND TORSO AREA. That is not professional neither ethical for Eddie Bauer reputation. Even when I deliberately tried to let it "loft" up, it still looks miserably empty. Everything about this down jacket feels cheap. I am honestly VERY disappointed with this purchase!

    Pros

    • LOOKS GOOD

    Cons

    • The zippers are much too small & fragile. At 47

Comments about First Ascent|Men|Jackets & Vests Men's MicroTherm StormDown Jacket:

At 47 degrees the jacket barely keeps me warm. It is very form fitting, better keep a thin mid section, or it won't fit. It does look great, but it does not keep as warm as advertised. Most important, the zippers are too small and fragile. Pull the zippers slowly or they may break/tear.
