World's Best Down®

Our First Ascent guide team built this ultralight jacket for alpine climbing in cool to cold weather. Windproof ripstop polyester shell. Each cluster of the super high-loft 800 fill StormDown insulation is also treated with a DWR finish so the down retains its loft and superior insulating properties even in wet conditions.

"It's made specifically to be a very lightweight layer with down, which makes it lighter than any kind of other insulation and very compact and packable. When you wear it, you hardly know you have it on."
Ed Viesturs, Eddie Bauer Alpine Guide

Saved our family-time!

By Sonntag69

Comments about First Ascent|Men|Jackets & Vests Men's MicroTherm StormDown Jacket:

We recently finished a day of skiing and tubing in 22-degree partly-cloudy weather with light winds. On arrival to the ski hill I noticed that even though I'd packed all the other gear for the family I'd forgotten my heavy jacket. At the time I was only wearing on my torso a next-to-skin long sleeve undershirt, a light fleece shirt, and this jacket. I also wore my neck gaiter, helmet, lined ski pants, ski socks, and gloves. What surprised me was the wind-resistance and the ability to stay warm even sitting on the lifts.

There are three items that I add to improve the jacket 1). better quality zippers that feel smoother and sturdier 2). an adjustable hem to keep in the warm 3). a little more room in the belly and 4). somehow prevent the stray feather from sticking out.

What I really like about the design of the jacket are the stretchy panels behind the armpits that allow broader shoulders and chests room when crossing arms. I also really appreciate the Pertex fabric for its windproof qualities and durability. I have a different brand jacket that also uses Pertex and it's held up very well in rough conditions including playing with dogs.

Poor quality zippers !

Cons

  • Poor quality zipper

Comments about First Ascent|Men|Jackets & Vests Men's MicroTherm StormDown Jacket:

Poor quality zipper, always gets stuck. I really wish Eddie Bauer would address this issue as I have had two of the jackets and both had the same issue with the zipper. The jacket itself is light, warm and comfortable. I would think that for the price EB would use a quality zipper.

Comments about First Ascent|Men|Jackets & Vests Men's MicroTherm StormDown Jacket:

Nice jacket. I'm 6' 224 lbs with a gym body and I ordered an XXL. After receiving it and trying it on, the fit was good. I could have took an XL but they were out of stock. But the XXL fits good. I'm not a big coat/ parka kind of guy. I actually used it today in the Cyclone Bomb / Blizzard 2018 in NYC... I wore a sweater and a long sleeve T and I was good. It's very light weight and at first you think is this going to keep me warm? It sure did. It's water repellent. Once I got indoors, you could see the water trickle off. I would definitely recommend!

    Great Jacket

    By Waga

    from Hawaii

    Pros

    • Lightweight for a down jacket.

    Cons

    • Cut of the jacket on the smaller size.

Comments about First Ascent|Men|Jackets & Vests Men's MicroTherm StormDown Jacket:

Used it to ski in 21 F weather. With wind and a little snow and the jacket kept me warm. Had under just a Nike dry fit long sleeve underlayer. In 43 F weather, it kept me warm enough as I was doing some walking. Even perspired on one day as my underlayer might have been a thermal variety. It rained one day and the jacket kept me dry. A hood might have helped.
