Great Jacket Minus Horrendous Hood

By Schelby12

Comments about First Ascent|Men|Jackets & Vests Men's Sandstone Shield Hooded Jacket:

This is a great jacket from the neck down. I'm 6'5" 220 and bought the TL size. It fits great, and does everything I wanted, except the hood is the worst design I've ever experienced. I'm a Eddie Bauer devote, but sadly the hood is so bad I will be returning this jacket and going with a less desirable but usable hooded jacket from another brand.

I understand it's designed to be able to wear with a helmet on, but sadly it's only useable when wearing a helmet and is completely awkward w/o a helmet on. The hood itself is too big and needs to be cinched down for wearing w/o a helmet. But the drawstrings only cinch the sides of the hood (which is designed oddly to expose your checks and nose but so large in the top it obscures your eyes/view, and the cinch device requires two hands in an awkward way to use). The cinch in the back that's supposed to pull the top of the hood back is designed too low and instead of pulling the top of the hood back (and out of your eyes), pulls at your ears and only makes the problem worse. The result is an awkward looking, and even worse performing hood, that's only good to use in the very rare instance you're wearing a helmet and weather conditions warrant the use of a hood. I don't understand why such a niche performing hood is on such a versatility driven jacket that's designed to be used in so many conditions.

DESCRIPTION SAYS IT HAS A CLOSE TO THE BODY FITNESS CUT. I DID NOT FIND THAT TO BE TRUE. THE LARGE FIT JUST LIKE ANY OTHER MENS LARGE JACKET. IT IS LIGHT WEIGHT AND HAS A NICE ADJUSTABLE HOOD.

Fits a little big, however that makes lots of room to wear a layer or two underneath if necessary.

Comments about First Ascent|Men|Jackets & Vests Men's Sandstone Shield Hooded Jacket:

From a fit perspective, this is perfect. I am 5'11" 175 lbs with a 34" waist and 41" chest and the Medium was spot on. My normal sleeve length is 34" and this gives me plenty of room. I can wear a micro fleece under it with plenty of room to move. The fabric moves with you as well. I wore it in light rain and it did its job. The finish details and stitching are well done. I would like to understand if there is a way to adjust the hood so that it isn't so massive. When I put the hood up in the rain, it was so big it hung down over my eyes and I couldn't see. There is some sort of adjustment on the hood, but it doesn't cinch back the top. Other than that, this is just what I was looking for. With just a shirt underneath, this is a good spring or early fall jacket (i.e high 50s to low 70s). Very wind proof.
