I love this coat...

Comments about Men|Outerwear|Jackets Men's Mainstay Insulated Trench:

I signed onto the EB website to see what deals they were featuring and ran across this coat. My coat. I've had one of these for about 4 years and have worn it a ton. I wear it to work every day in the winter over business casual and even over a sport jacket. It's certainly warm enough for urban wear, always looks great (basic, not fancy), I use the hood when it's snowing or blowing. I wore it every day in Scotland and Ireland where the winds can blow straight through you. It works in the car, you can zip out the lining. nice phone/wallet/map zip pocket on the inside breast pocket, inside elastic on the sleeves to keep the wind out, high collar, etc. I highly recommend this coat.

Comments about Men|Outerwear|Jackets Men's Mainstay Insulated Trench:

Waterproof zippers on the pockets —are a big deal! Pockets are big and roomy and plentiful. The hood is comfortable and warm and doesn't hinder straight ahead sight (like most hoods do). The length keeps you warm even in the strongest gales....and it looks good too.
I bought this coat for my 6'4" husband who needs a warm coat for many climes as he is a consultant. The first coat I found oh so long ago was how I actually "found" EB and it has been a solid, classy performer for years, but now it was time for this coat. I took a chance and ordered it as a "surprise". It was met with cautious acceptance ....but is now hands down, the favorite coat.
Thanks Eddie, you haven't let me down yet, and I no longer shop anywhere else.

Comments about Men|Outerwear|Jackets Men's Mainstay Insulated Trench:

I love this jacket. I felt compelled to write a review because I remember reading the reviews thoroughly and I hope this helps someone with their decision.

This is not your traditional trench nor is it meant to be. It's a hybrid that slots somewhere between a trench, a wool car coat, and a light parka.

I live in Chicago. As you can imagine the weather is variable and in this city we live by the mass transit system. For me, that's a suburban commuter train. My basic requirements are something that keeps me warm and dry, but it needed to have a respectable look. . .and I get compliments on this coat regularly.

I have worn this through a full season cycling through cold, rain, cold-rain, and heavy rain. I don't even carry an umbrella when I wear this jacket. I just don't like carrying them and this coat has done a great job in heavy rains.

When I initially decided on this purchase I was looking to buy a parka. I don't own one since I relocated to the market. I figured I would buy this and maybe step up to a parka if I felt the need. . .I don't. This coat has been warm enough for me in the harshest days last January at 5 degrees. I also wore this coat today in a rainy 45 degree day. . .which finally prompted me to write a review. The Mainstay somehow is warm enough on the coldest days, but is breathable enough on slightly warmer days so that your not in a bucket of sweat.

The coat has incredible versatility. It can fit over a sport coat if it's fairly light. It can be your go to option for daily use. If it's not raining I like to take off the hood for a cleaner look.

The coach has a clever hidden pocket near the zipper. You can also place your cellphone in the front pocket which has a pass-through for your headphones. The warming pockets are large and accessible.

Negatives: The hood is fairly thin and its job is solely to keep you dry and not provide warmth. You will need a hat. The big logo takes away from an even cleaner look.

Comments about Men|Outerwear|Jackets Men's Mainstay Insulated Trench:

Ue the term "trenchcoat" and my mind goes back to those wonderful WW I styles as worn by Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca and Ralph Bellamy in Man Against Crime. The style lasted a long time, through WW II and for years, even decades past. Take away the belt and the epaulets, make it single breasted, and is it still a trenchcoat or has it become a raincoat?

Well, we really don't need the epaulets or the belt since they were intended to hold a sword, and a single breasted coat with modern closures can keep out cold air and rain more efficiently than a double breasted coat. The Thermafill (tm I assume) is light (100 grams - about 3 ounces) which is a lot lighter than some modern insulators) b ut it has a puffy look -- not the totally puffy look that's part of the New York City style, but somewhat puffy all the same.

Translation -- this is the right coat for cold rainy days. If it lacks the panache of the wartime trench coats, it
makes up for it in practicality -- with pockets for cell phones and wallets that can be reached without the need to undress to answer the phone.

One obvious caveat -- this is not a replacement for a down parka, and even a down parka is no replacement for proper layering. If the coat is waterproof it's because there's rain, which means it's above freezing, but that's still cold when you're standing waiting for a bus. This coat should be worn over a suit coat or a warm sweater.

IMHO this is not a very good looking coat, but it is practical. Practical wins on a cold wet day.
