Winner of National Geographic's 2012 Gear of the Year Award

Winner of Backpacker Magazine's 2012 Editor's Choice Snow Award

Guide-built and guide-tested on FA expeditions to the world's highest peaks. This three person, four-season expedition tent is the new standard for the world most hostile environments. A true four-season expedition tent, the Katabatic surpasses what is being used in most expedition outfitters and guide services programs in the areas of weight, floor space, and most importantly, strength.

"For years, The North Face VE 25 has ruled base camps on seven continents, but the reinvention of Eddie Bauer in its First Ascent line has brought a new big dome tent to the highest peaks."
National Geographic

"'This is the best four-season tent I've ever used,' said one tester after his 2012 Everest expedition. Even at 26,000 feet, with winds routinely topping 50 mph, he proclaimed this six-pole dome (plus a pole for the fly) quick to pitch and solid as a rock."

        Comments about Katabatic 3-Person Tent:

I originally bought this tent for mountaineering but have used it beyond that.

I have brought this tent to Mexico, Mount Rainier, WI State Parks, and my good 'ol backyard. I have used a variety of other Mountaineering tents and so far have found this one to be my favorite.

First off the overall look. In town or maybe at your local state park it can be a little stand out with its colors but its those type of features that you want in the mountains, either so you or others can see your tent. The reflective parts on the guy-lines area, around the doors is helpful at night.

The inside, being 6'2" I love how roomy it is on the inside for head room, the way it is designed has created high arching walls making for more head room. All the pockets are amazing to separate out your gear and from your tent mates. The front vestibule has plenty of room to have a stove and cook in it, we even had some added gear up there too!

I have been in some strong 40+ MPH winds and have had to problems or worries about the tent being destroyed. The ease of setup makes it really nice for having new campers help you setup the tent. With matching color poles was a genius idea and wish all tents had these, glad the Stargazers do though. But I have had multiple friends have this be their first or second tent they have set up and with minor direction haven't had any problems.

Granted its weight is there but if you look for equivalent tents they are going to weigh the same amount so I can't dock it down as it is no different there.

              Comments about Katabatic 3-Person Tent:

I bought this tent for mountaineering trips because it seemed like it outperformed similar tents in terms of space, weight, and value.
I just spent a few nights in it at Camp Schurman on Mt. Rainier. The setup is simple once you've practiced it a few times. The Katabatic's footprint is rather large compared to other mountaineering tents, so it took some extra time to prepare a snow platform for it, but the upside is that it is very spacious. The interior pockets are really handy. The front vestibule is spacious and easy to exit. The rear vestibule works for stashing gear, but it's also a convenient place to access the inside or outside of the tent. The Katabatic is incredibly solid, especially once you've staked it out.
The only thing that's inadequate about it are the stakes themselves: you probably want to invest in some more solid stakes if you're going to take this tent climbing. The small stakes that come with the tent are not well-suited to snow, and tend to pull out, even when they've been buried properly.
That said, it doesn't really matter if the stakes pull out. Our last night at Schurman featured the violent, multi-directional wind gusts that are typical of that spot. These have nearly destroyed other tents on previous trips. But despite some of the rainfly and guy stakes pulling out, the Katabatic felt as solid as ever in these winds. It has some extra strength built into it.

                Comments about Katabatic 3-Person Tent:

My two very adventurous and capable young girls and I just took out our new Katabatic for a test run and LOVED it !! I got it for us based on the technical features that we could deal with whatever weather and conditions came at us, unexpected or not. The girls are 8 and 9 and are well trained by their SAR Pro dad, but we are still three ladies traveling.

The product description covers technical specifications which are all great. What we noticed, in addition, however, was how easy it is to use. All the technical strength in the world doesn't mean anything if it is a drag to take out and you always choose something else in your inventory. I handed the bag to the girls and they pitched it all by themselves. They have pitched a lot of tents but the ease means that it will be easy for the three of us when the wind is blowing, darkness is falling and our hands are numb with cold. We did not use the fly on our first night out as you can see in the photo. Everything was color coded. terrific.

The inside shape is great to move around in. No banging into walls constantly, heads rubbing on sloped ceiling panels. Really pleasant and easily accommodated our card games and hanging lanterns after dark. The two zippered skylights in the ceiling were unexpected and great to have. The door zippers are smooth and easy with only one hand. No tugging on walls or having to use two hands. The other thing that was so convenient was the abundance of mesh storage inside. Many tents have one or two, or only on the bottom. This tent has them at all levels and clearly marked with blue tape so they are easy to recognize. I didn't have to put my glasses in the pockets at the base of the tent and risk them getting crushed in the night.

We had such a great experience and can't wait to go for more. Thank you First Ascent.

                      Comments about Katabatic 3-Person Tent:

Easily the best 4 season tent I have owned. I upgraded from The Northface VE25 and am happy I did. This is an amazing tent. Very room for 3 guys, warm, easy to put up. I can't say enough good things about this tent!
