NEEDS "WORK"

Comments about Kara Koram™ 0º StormDown™ Sleeping Bag:

I sent my First Ascent 0 Degree Karakoram bag back due to a totally inadequate neck collar.
Namely:
1. too small i.e. not nearly "tall" enough)
2. no drawstrings (amazing)
3. no right shoulder closure (even more amazing)
4. MUCH too low (at my chest, not my neck)

If this bag was "guide tested" I think that guide tested it at 30 F. not 0 F.

All, and I mean ALL winter bags of other major companies like TNF, Western Mountaineering, Feathered Friends, Sierra Designs, Montbell, etc have good, useable neck collars. Why not Eddie Bauer?? Their original bags in the 1960 had good collars.

Yeah, it has good fabrics, excellent DWR treated high quality down, good zipper, nice shape, etc. but the vestigial neck "collar" makes it more of a 25 F. bag instead of a 0 F. bag.

Comments about Kara Koram™ 0º StormDown™ Sleeping Bag:

This is an update to the review a year ago. While this time I put it into true test.
On Valentine's Day's evening, there was a strong snow storm in the Northeast. I camped out with the kids in the snow with my three season tent. For the whole night I slept with the zipper of the sleeping bag facing the brunt of the wind. The temperature dipped to -1 degree with wind chill factor of -14. I slept on top of an Big Agnes Airecore sleeping pad, wearing lightweight base layer, and the bag was able to keep me warm the whole night. The snow was dusting on the sleeping bag from the mesh of the tent all night, I closed the head box as small as possible to block the snow, but there were still plenty snow blew to my face all the time.
The most important thing for me is that a sleeping bag should be able to keep one warm , and the Kara Koram bag had done a great job doing so.

Comments about Kara Koram™ 0º StormDown™ Sleeping Bag:

I've only used this bag three times and I can tell that the bag is well made, but the down saturates very easily.

I bought the bag for winter ski tours and have used it on a one night trip at -8*F and on one two night trip at with about 25*F temps the first night and -5*F temps the second.

Though I went through lengths to keep the bag dry (eg. not sleeping with my boots in the bag, not sleeping in a tent . . .) the down completely saturated by the end of the second night on my two night trip to the point that I could feel very large ice crystals in the down.

Comments about Kara Koram™ 0º StormDown™ Sleeping Bag:

maybe I'm not thinking clearly, but if I understand correctly, this bag is really only a thermally efficient fit for those around 7 feet tall. Why is it so long? I'm 5'9" (pretty average if not on the tall side for females) and a thermally efficient bag for my height should be around 170-183cm (66-72 inches), but the smallest length this comes in is 84 inches? The longest sleeping bags I've really seen in this level of quality/price is 203cm or so (80 inches) meant for those up to 6'8". I'd love this bag in a length of around 70 inches, but this is so long it's not thermally efficient and it's unnecessary extra weight/space. I don't really want to have to put my boots in the bottom to stay warm at this price. EB - love your stuff, please make this in a smaller length.
