Comments about First Ascent|Gear|Backpacks & Duffels Alchemist 40/55 Pack:

In this latest model, they have removed the vertical straps that offer 3 different lash points for the expanded lid cover. There is nowhere to attach them now that doesn't seem awkward or unsecure. I went to the mall store and inquired only to get confused looks.

Comments about First Ascent|Gear|Backpacks & Duffels Alchemist 40/55 Pack:

The pack looks great! I'm excited about trying it out soon. The only thing that is missing is an instruction manual about the features and how to use them.

Comments about First Ascent|Gear|Backpacks & Duffels Alchemist 40/55 Pack:

I wasn't shopping for a pack when I bought this in my local Eddie Bauer store. My wife and I were a couple days out from heading to North Cascades and Mt Rainier NPs, and I have some 10 backpacks already. When I picked it up, I thought, "Wow, that seems heavy!" But as I made my way through it's features, I became more and more sold on the functionality of this back pack.

First, I was very attracted to the wide shoulder straps. That, to me, is the first point of comfort for any backpack. They aren't heavily padded, and I don't think they need to be in this size pack with the width as they are. The hip belt is also set up very well (and is removable). All in all, the suspension system for this pack is A+.

I packed a good 30+ pounds in it (unnecessarily) while hiking, and most of the time I forgot completely I was wearing it. That says a lot for comfort. At least a few times I was down on my knees, bent over, still wearing it...taking low to the ground perspective photos in the parks. The cinch straps on this are so effective it keeps the load from shifting on your back, and remains comfortable even in awkward positions. This pack is super slip compared to the previous version (which I also own), and I prefer this new design greatly. The ice tool storage is much improved in my opinion as well.

The only negative thing I have to say about the pack is the size of the pass through above the left shoulder strap for a hydration bladder hose. I have pretty skinny fingers, and I can't even get my pinky through it. While the hose for a hydration bladder will certainly fit well, I don't think there's enough geometry in the world to get an angle where a bite-valve would pass through the port. It seems to me one would have to remove the entire valve assembly, pass the hose through, and reattach the valve. That would mean you would have to remove the bite-valve for refills, or refill the bladder while its still 'attached' to the pack. Neither of those options appeal to me.

      Instructions?

Comments about First Ascent|Gear|Backpacks & Duffels Alchemist 40/55 Pack:

I just received this pack after having my eye on it for quite a while. Looks great. It looks to be very intentionally designed and engineered. HOWEVER, with so much effort having gone into the design, how about some kind of instructions or online video as to the designers intention with many of the features??? For example, the attachment at the bottom of the back-- what was the design intention and how can I make best use of it? Help your customers maximize the value of their purchase!
